The Nigerian Ballon d’Or Nominee Victor Osihmen contract extension with SC Napoli has hit a roadblock, leaving fans eagerly awaiting the outcome as La Gazzetta dello Sport reports.
In late August, it seemed like a done deal, with Osimhen, 24, and Napoli reportedly close to signing the extension. However, as time passes, the official confirmation has yet to come.
According to reports from La Gazzetta dello Sport, the delay in finalizing the deal is attributed to two key factors.
Firstly, Napoli’s president, Aurelio De Laurentiis, is adamant about introducing a staggering €140 to €150 million release clause in Osimhen’s contract. The intent behind such a high release clause is to deter potential suitors from attempting to easily sign the Nigerian star. Quite a few top-clubs from English Premier League and Saudi Pro league were seeking to recruit him this summer. Due to several reports the player and his representees insist on a much lower figure. According to Transfermarkt the centre forwards estimated current transfer value is €120 million.
Secondly, Osimhen is reportedly concerned about his image rights, despite Napoli offering him more freedom in this regard compared to their other players. With his current contract with Nike set to expire at the end of the year, Osimhen is keen to fully capitalize on any new sponsorship deals that may come his way. Napoli had made an exception for him when he joined from Lille, and he wishes to continue benefiting from such arrangements. The financial stakes in this matter are also substantial.
As the transfer window has now closed in Europe and Saudi Arabia, the urgency surrounding the contract talks has somewhat diminished. Both parties are expected to take their time to carefully iron out the details. It’s anticipated that the Nigerian star will also see a significant increase from his current €4.5 million wages.
While there’s reported agreement on the salary structure of the new contract, the issue of an appropriate release clause for Osimhen remains unresolved. This impasse has led to the delay in signing the contract extension.
Furthermore, Napoli has set a deadline for Osimhen to agree to the new contract, extending until January 2024. Should an agreement not be reached by then, the deal could be taken off the table, leaving Osimhen with a tough decision to make.
Osimhen, who has confirmed his intention to stay at Napoli, has begun the new season in great form, scoring three goals in as many games. However, the prolonged contract negotiations are likely to keep the prospect of a move away from the club on his mind.
