Dennis Masinde Onyango, former Uganda Cranes captain and Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper, is set to retire as he will not renew his contract with the club after the 2023/24 season, according to The Nerve Africa information.Β
The revered goalkeeper will conclude an absolutely brilliant career, choosing not to play for any team other than Sundowns.
The Nerve Africa source, close to the player stated: “Dennis will not renew his contract and will no longer play professionally. At his age, he feels he has accomplished everything and is now looking to start his coaching certification. He may also continue to work with Sundowns, particularly helping with the goalkeeping department, like his close friend and former goalkeeper Kennedy Mwene did.”
Since the arrival of South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams from SuperSport United in 2022, Onyango has found playing time limited, falling to second in the pecking order. Despite this, Onyango’s tenure at Sundowns since 2011 has been marked by numerous triumphs, making him one of the most successful players in the club’s history.
Onyango’s trophy haul with Mamelodi Sundowns includes:
Seven Premier Soccer League (PSL) titles
Three Nedbank Cups
Two Telkom Knockouts
One CAF Champions League
One CAF Super Cup
One MTN8
Adding to his accolades from his time at Supersport United, Onyango is the most decorated player in Premier Soccer League (PSL) history, with a total of 10 championships. His illustrious career was further highlighted in 2016 when he was named the African Player of the Year based in Africa after his pivotal role in Sundowns’ CAF Champions League victory. He was also named in the CAF Team of the Year in 2016 and 2018.
Onyango also retired from the Uganda National team, the Cranes, in 2021, after earning 82 official caps and leading the team to the 2017 and 2019 Africa Cup of Nations finals since his debut in 2005. His retirement marks the end of an era for both his club and country, leaving a legacy of exceptional skill and leadership on the field.
