Months after signing a one-year contract extension with Uganda Premier League side Vipers SC, prolific forward Yunus Junior Sentamu could be on the move following talks with Scottish League Two outfit Peterhead FC, The Nerve Africa has exclusively learned.
A source at Vipers disclosed that the player has held concrete talks with Peterhead and that they are close to reaching an agreement. However, the Scottish side will have to negotiate with the six-time Uganda Premier League champions for a fee to facilitate Sentamu’s transfer.
βIt has been a few weeks of uncertainty. He (Sentamu) signed a one-year extension, but it didn’t take long before Peterhead came calling. Peterhead is ready to compensate for this, and Vipers will not block him if he wants to leave. There have been talks in the past days, and it’s closer now,β the source added.
Pending completion, the move to Scotland would mark the first time in three and a half years that the 29-year-old has played outside Uganda. Previously, he has played at Amazulu in South Africa, AS Vita in Congo, CS Sfaxien in Tunisia, Ilves in Finland, and Albanian side KF Tirana.
Sentamu, who returned to Vipers in January 2021, has been a major hit at the club, establishing himself as one of the most technically gifted players in the Uganda Premier League. He has also won two league championships and two Uganda Cups.
He was also instrumental in the Venoms clinching their first-ever spot in the CAF Champions League group stages in the 2022/23 campaign. The forward has featured in 90 Uganda Premier League matches since his return to Kitende, scoring 42 goals and providing 18 assists.
The 42-goal tally can be added to the 11 goals he has managed in the Uganda Cup and the two goals in the CAF Champions League, making it 55 goals. However, last season in the league, he only scored four goals and provided seven assists.
Meanwhile, with the Uganda national senior team, the Cranes, Sentamu has amassed 32 international caps since his debut in 2014. He has since scored eight goals and provided five assists.
