Ugandan right-back Herbert Bockhorn is set to make a switch from German Second Division side Magdeburg to third-tier outfit Phonix Lubeck on a loan deal, sources from The Nerve Africa have exclusively revealed.
Bockhorn, who renewed his contract with Magdeburg in June, will join Phonix Lubeck during the January transfer window on a six-month loan. Having made just one appearance this season, the move is aimed at securing him more playing time.
A source close to his representative, ROOF, confirmed the development, stating that Phonix Lubeck has agreed to cover his salary until the end of the 2024/25 campaign.
“Herbert (Bockhorn) wants to play, that’s all, and he has been promised this at Phonix Lubeck. He will join them in January on loan until the end of the season and then return to Magdeburg to fight for his place. With his experience, Lubeck is gaining a quality player, no doubt,” the source said in an exclusive interview with The Nerve Africa.
Bockhorn, whose Transfermarkt valuation is estimated at €700,000, has spent two and a half seasons at Magdeburg. During this time, he has made 57 appearances across all competitions, scoring five goals and providing two assists.
The 29-year-old has previously played for several German clubs, including VfL Bochum, Borussia Dortmund II, Werder Bremen II, Werder Bremen U17 and U19, and SC Wiedenbrück. He also had a stint with Huddersfield Town FC in England during the 2019/20 season.
Despite spending his entire career in Europe, Bockhorn has only received three call-ups to the Uganda Cranes (the national senior team) and is yet to earn a cap. However, with the team qualifying for the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, he will be eager to secure a spot in the squad for the continental tournament.
