Following his departure from Kenya Premier League side Bandari FC, Ugandan attacker Derrick Nsibambi is nearing a switch to Europe, with Cypriot outfit Othellos Athienou, sources close to The Nerve Africa have exclusively learned.
The move, pending an official announcement by Othellos Athienou, quashes recent reports that had linked the free agent with a return to 13-time Uganda Premier League champions and his boyhood club, KCCA FC.
A source close to the player disclosed that Nsibambi held concrete talks with Othellos in the past week, with the club offering a two-year contract. It has also been revealed that the 30-year-old will travel to Cyprus on Tuesday to finalize the move and sign the contract.
βDerrick (Nsibambi) has all but finalized his move to Cyprus with Othellos. I can confirm that it’s a two-year deal and that he’ll travel early next week, most likely on Tuesday. Negotiations have been ongoing behind closed doors over the past few days, but it’s now done. He’ll have to pass his medical before applying for a work permit,β the source told The Nerve Africa.
At Bandari last season, Nsibambi scored five times in four Kenya Premier League games. The low number of games played was attributed to recurring injury setbacks throughout the campaign. Meanwhile, in the 2022/23 season at URA FC in Uganda, he scored twice in nine league games.
He has also previously played for Oman side Al-Bashaer Club, Sebeta City FC in the Ethiopian Premier League, Kira Young FC in Uganda, and Smouha FC in the Egyptian top-flight division.
At the international level, Nsibambi, who debuted for the Uganda National Senior team, the Cranes, in 2017, has made 15 appearances, scoring two goals and providing three assists.
