Ugandan left-footed forward Pius Chris Akena has officially inked a one-and-a-half-year contract with Greek second-tier club Apollon Pontou FC, as per Swift Sports.
Akena, who recently transferred from Greek third-tier side Megas Alexandros Agia Marinas, showcased his skills during the first half of the season. The financial side of the deal has been undisclosed, but according to Transfermarkt, the player’s current value estimates at €25,000.
Formerly with Maroons FC, Akena brings a wealth of experience, having played for Aspire Academy and UAE clubs Al Rams FC and Shabab Al Ahli Dubai. The talented forward earned two caps with the Uganda Cranes in 2022 under the guidance of coach Micho, featuring in friendlies against Iraq and Bahrain in January.
Apollon Pontou, based in Polykastro, Kilkis, Greece, is set to be Akena’s new football home, with Polykastro Stadium as the backdrop for their home games. Currently, the club holds the 12th position on the Group A table of the Greek second division league.
In addition to Akena’s move, other Ugandan players making waves in Greek football include Ronald Madoi, Ivan Irinimbabazi, and Daniel Isiagi, who are currently showcasing their talents with SFK Pierikos in the third tier.
