Tariq Lamptey’s Challenging Road to Recovery: Salary, Value, and Prospects for Ghana’s Rising Star

A few years ago, Tariq Lamptey was one of the most talked-about wonderkids in the Premier League, with London clubs trying to sign the defender several times in a row, offering over €50 million for his transfer. 

However, in recent seasons, the young Ghanaian has suffered from constant injuries, which not only deprive him of playing time but also of the chance to join more renowned and powerful teams in the near future. 

Tariq Lamptey’s Salary at Brighton & Hove Albion F.C.

The Ghana national team defender joined the English team in January 2020. However, within a year, the Ghanaian footballer re-signed a contract with the club: the new agreement is calculated until June 30, 2025. In two years in England, the Ghanaian will earn €4,279,279, excluding bonuses. For the 2023/2024 season, Lamptey will receive €2,127,319, which amounts to €40,910 per week.

For the 2023/2024 season, Brighton & Hove Albion F.C.’s total salary expenditure amounts to €72,207,276 a year, that is, €1,388,601 a week. The team’s highest-paid player is winger Ansu Fati. The Spanish national team player earns €9,724,885 a year: €187,017 a week. Tariq Lamptey is 15th in the salary rankings and shares this spot with Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen. This is the ninth indicator among foreign footballers of the English club. 

Moreover, the Ghanaian defender is the fourth highest-paid non-European player at Brighton & Hove Albion F.C. Rounding out the top five, Argentine midfielder Facundo Buonanotte earns almost 2.5 times less. Throughout his career, the Ghanaian defender’s salary has been constantly growing. Being a graduate of the Chelsea F.C. academy, Lamptey managed to debut for the main team of the London club. However, in the same season, during the winter, the defender moved to another English team. T

he first agreement with Brighton & Hove Albion F.C. resulted in the Ghanaian’s salary increasing by approximately 24 times. A year later, during which the Ghanaian defender became one of the main players of the team, the club re-signed an agreement with the footballer: thanks to this, Tariq Lamptey’s earnings increased by another 3.5 times. Thus, the Ghanaian now has the highest salary in his career.

Market Value: Decline Due to Constant Serious Injuries

Initially, after signing the contract with Brighton & Hove Albion F.C., the Ghanaian defender did not even make the team’s lineup. Because of this, his transfer value fell by €300,000. However, already after a successful debut, in the middle of spring, the transfer sum of the Ghanaian increased by 2.5 times and continued to grow in the following season. By the middle of the 2020/2021 Premier League season, Lamptey had finally settled in the starting lineup, scored a goal, and made three assists. Thanks to quality play, the transfer sum of the defender more than doubled, reaching its peak. At 18 million euros, the market value of the player lasted for 20 months, despite the fact that the Ghanaian spent nearly half of this time recovering from a hamstring injury. 

However, in the 2022/2023 season, the defender lost his place in the starting lineup of the English team, and his value began to decrease. A knee injury, received in winter, which caused Tariq Lamptey to miss the remaining part of the championship, also affected this. Serious health problems continued to plague the Ghanaian in the current season. Due to constant injuries, the transfer sum of the Ghanaian defender decreased by one and a half times. Thus, Transfermarkt currently estimates Lamptey’s value at €12 million. Due to the fall in value, the defender left the top five of the most expensive Ghanaian footballers and is now in sixth place.

Achievements with the National Team

Born in one of the districts of London, Tariq Lamptey represented the youth and junior national teams of England from the U-18 to U-21 levels. Along with the English, the defender participated in the European Championships several times. Moreover, Lamptey managed to score a goal in a friendly match against North Macedonia for the U-19 team. Nevertheless, in 2022, Lamptey made his debut for the Ghana national team in a friendly match against Brazil. A few months later, the defender went with the national team to the World Cup in Qatar. In that tournament, the footballer played in two group stage matches, and the Ghanaians scored three points and were unable to break through to the playoffs. Together with the national team, Tariq Lamptey was supposed to go to the African Cup of Nations 2023. However, at the end of November, the Ghanaian received a serious injury and did not make the squad for the tournament in Ivory Coast. In total, the Ghanaian defender played four matches for the national team and did not mark any resultative actions.

Football and Financial Prospects

The 2023/2024 season for Tariq Lamptey started only at the beginning of September: the defender did not even make it to the bench for the first rounds due to a knee injury received in the last championship round. Having returned to the lineup of the English team, the Ghanaian played in seven matches in all tournaments and managed to make three goal assists. 

However, already in October, Lamptey stopped taking to the field: at first, he did not make the lineup, and then he received another injury. From October to January, the Ghanaian defender played only in three matches. 

For the remaining one and a half years at the English club, Tariq Lamptey needs to recover from injuries and return to the starting lineup. Then the young Ghanaian will not only get the opportunity to re-sign a contract with the team on more favorable terms but also once again attract the attention of top clubs in England and beyond.
