Kenyan forward Beja Nyamawi has declined to extend his contract with Kenyan Premier League side Bandari FC following growing interest from English League One club Shrewsbury Town, The Nerve Africa has exclusively learned.
Nyamawi’s current contract with Bandari is set to expire in June 2025, and the club had sought to extend it in January to either fend off interest from potential suitors or strengthen their position during negotiations with interested parties.
However, the 25-year-old has turned down the new offer as he considers the possibility of playing European football with Shrewsbury Town. A source close to the player revealed that Shrewsbury made initial contact with his camp last week to inquire about his contract situation.
The source further indicated that Nyamawi’s camp expects Shrewsbury to return next week with a formal offer for the player, after which negotiations with Bandari regarding compensation for the remainder of the contract are expected to begin.
βBandari wanted Beja to sign a new deal, but he was advised to turn down the offer, which he did, due to a potential European move to Shrewsbury Town. We had contact from Shrewsbury last week, and weβre optimistic theyβll return early in January. The player is definitely open to the move, but the clubs will need to agree on compensation for the six months remaining,β the source revealed to The Nerve Africa in an exclusive interview.
This season at Bandari, Nyamawi has scored seven goals and provided four assists in 11 games across all competitions. Last season, he netted 12 goals in 18 appearances. Before joining Bandari, he scored 20 goals for SS Assad in the National Super League.
On the international stage, the attacker has progressed through Kenya’s youth system, representing the U20 and U23 teams. While he is yet to earn a senior cap, he was recently included in the squad summoned last week to compete in the Mapinduzi Cup.
