Nigerian forward Abubakar Lawal will leave Ugandan side Vipers Sports Club to join Egyptian Premier League side Pyramids FC in the January 2025 transfer window, The Nerve Africa has exclusively learned.

The 29-year-old, whose contract with Vipers was originally set to expire in June next year, has agreed to an early termination in January to facilitate his transfer to Pyramids. Lawal is currently sidelined with an injury that he has been carrying for the past one and a half months.

A source close to Lawal’s agency, Black Diamonds, confirmed the development and revealed that the versatile player will sign a two-and-a-half-year contract, keeping him at Pyramids until at least 2027.

“Abubakar (Lawal) and his club (Vipers) have agreed to his departure in January, allowing him to pursue his dream in Egypt with Pyramids. Pyramids need no introduction; they have established themselves as continental giants in recent years. Their ambition is to win the CAF Champions League, and Abubakar is eager to be a part of that,” the source told The Nerve Africa.

Lawal, who can also play as an attacking midfielder, has spent the past two seasons at Vipers. During his time there, he made 42 appearances in the Uganda Premier League and the CAF Champions League. In the 2022/23 season, he made history by scoring the club’s first-ever goal in the Champions League group stages.

Before joining Vipers, the player featured for Rwandan powerhouse AS Kigali, where he played 16 games and scored 13 goals. He also had stints with Nasarawa United and Wikki Tourists FC in Nigeria.

Although he has yet to make a senior appearance for Nigeria’s national team, the Super Eagles, Lawal has represented the country at the U18, U20, and U23 levels.
