Uganda Cranes international Steven Desse Mukwala and Ghana Premier League giants Asante Kotoko FC have opened talks for a possible contract renewal, The Nerve Africa sources have exclusively learned.
Mukwala’s contract with the Porcupine Warriors is due to expire on June 30, but he is set to extend it for an additional two years, should the two parties reach an agreement. He is also not among the 18 players that Asante Kotoko has released ahead of what promises to be a busy transfer window.
The 24-year-old is viewed as one of the most important figures at the club. A trusted source close to the player has revealed that the forward is set to stay with the two-time CAF Champions League winners.
βAsante Kotoko tabled their offer, and talks are currently ongoing. We are working towards what can be the best for Steve, and I’m sure it won’t be too long. It’s two years because he needs that stability, but also to consider what the future holds. He is happy at the club; that can’t be questioned,β the source said.
Mukwala, whose valuation is estimated at β¬175K by TransferMarket, has enjoyed an individually successful campaign with Asante Kotoko. Last season, he was the second top-scorer in the Ghanaian Premier League, having netted 14 goals in 28 matches.
Since joining them in 2022, he has scored 25 goals in 59 matches, a decent return. He has previously played for six-time Uganda Premier League champions Vipers SC and Maroons FC. He also played for URA FC, which was his last team in Uganda before joining Asante Kotoko.
For the Uganda National Senior team, the Cranes, Mukwala, who debuted in 2021, has garnered 11 international caps, scoring three goals and assisting on two occasions. He was in the starting eleven in the recent 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Botswana (1-0) and Algeria (1-2).
