Hugely experienced and versatile Ugandan midfielder Shafiq Kagimu is moments away from extending his stay at North Macedonian top-flight side FK Rabotnicki, The Nerve Africa has exclusively learned.
In an exclusive interview, Kagimu, who is on holiday in Kampala, disclosed that an agreement had been reached with the club and that he would sign for one more year before the start of the 2024/25 season.
“There’s no problem, I’ll stay for another year and see what happens after that. Right now, I’m focused on personal business and family. My agent has done a brilliant job. I’m very happy at Rabotnicki, and I’m pleased to continue. Hopefully next season, we’ll finish in a better place,” the 25-year-old told The Nerve Africa.
Kagimu, who joined the club last year, played 21 of their 33 league games as they clinched an eighth-place finish with 42 points. He hopes to secure even more minutes next season, having taken time to acclimatize to his new surroundings in his first season.
It should be noted that the fleet-footed midfielder, who can be deployed in both defensive and attacking roles, joined Rabotnicki from Kenyan Premier League champions Gor Mahia, where he had spent less than a year. He made his name as a skipper at Uganda Premier League side URA FC, where he played for four seasons, featuring in 80 league matches and scoring 17 goals.
Meanwhile, Kagimu made his national senior team (Uganda Cranes) debut in 2019 and has since featured nine times. However, he missed out on a call-up to the Cranes team gearing up to face Botswana and Algeria in the upcoming World Cup qualification matches.
