Zambian defender Golden Mafwenta, currently on loan at FC Metalist from Czech Republic club Vyskov until June 2025, has revealed to The Nerve Africa that he plans to explore other opportunities in Europe next year.
Mafwenta recently returned to international duty, earning a call-up to the Zambian national team last month for the first time since January. He featured in both 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Ivory Coast and Sierra Leone, playing 23 minutes.
The 23-year-old explained that his move to Ukraine was a temporary measure aimed at regaining his form.
βI went to Ukraine to regain my form, not to stay,β he said. βI have a lot of plans. For me to be that side [Ukraine], I just wanted to change the team and the environment. So, I am not there to stay. But if anything happens, I can stay, though thatβs not my plan.β
Adapting in Ukraine
Mafwenta, a former Zanaco FC defender, has played ten games in the Ukrainian First League this season and is enjoying his time in the country.
βSo far, so good, and it’s really amazing. Iβm really enjoying it there. I think everything is different now. Iβve met a lot of good people who helped me regain confidence, adapt my lifestyle, and improve my performance as well.β
A Journey of Growth
Mafwentaβs journey to Europe began in 2021 when he transferred from Zambiaβs Super League side Zanaco to Vyskov, marking a significant step forward in his career. While many had high expectations for his success, his stay in Vyskov was brief. In 2022, he was loaned to Real Monarchs, a move he described as part of his overall development.
Since moving to Europe three years ago, Mafwenta has made 73 appearances across all competitions, scoring two goals and providing two assists.
Eyes on Europe
The defender is committed to continuing his career in Europe and will assess new opportunities next year.
βFor now, itβs Europe. I just have to focus on Europe,β he explained. βAs for Saudi Arabia, if something comes up, maybe. But right now, my focus is entirely on Europe.β
While Mafwenta has faced challenges with his form in the past, he remains determined to establish himself at the highest level and make a lasting impact in European football.
