“Chelsea should be Lookman’s next home” – Ex-Nigeria international Mba

Former Nigerian midfielder Sunday Mba has identified English Premier League side Chelsea as the most suitable destination for compatriot Ademola Lookman, who is set to leave UEFA Europa League champions Atalanta Bergamo.

Lookman has been earmarked for an exit from Atalanta at the end of the current season, despite his contract running until June 2026. While there were initial plans for a departure from the Gewiss Stadium, it is now clearer that he will leave following his recent spat with manager Gian Piero Gasperini.

Gasperini labeled the 27-year-old the “worst penalty taker” in the wake of their Champions League defeat to Club Brugge. Lookman responded with a statement on social media, expressing discontent over what he termed “disrespect” from the Italian tactician.

In light of these events, Mba has advised Chelsea to pursue Lookman’s signature, as he believes the move would not only suit the player’s style of play but also make the Blues a much stronger attacking force. Chelsea, along with Arsenal and PSG, have been reported as potential suitors.

“If I were a sporting director or a coach at Chelsea, I’d push for Lookman,” Mba stated in an exclusive interview with The Nerve Africa, before adding, “I think it would be a win-win situation for both parties, given the nature of the player.”

“Chelsea should be Lookman’s next home because the style of play suits what Enzo Maresca wants in his attackers. He’s fast, technically gifted, can dribble, create chances, and score loads of goals. With due respect, most of Chelsea’s forwards struggle to match even two of these qualities.”

Lookman has scored 15 goals and provided six assists in 28 appearances for Atalanta this season. In comparison, Chelsea’s Jadon Sancho (two goals, five assists), Christopher Nkunku (13 goals, four assists), and Nicolas Jackson (nine goals, five assists) have recorded fewer contributions than the Super Eagles forward.

“Again, with due respect, he’s better than most of Chelsea’s current attacking options—perhaps with the exception of Cole Palmer. Lookman would slot into that team and be an instant hit. Chelsea would also improve tremendously in the final third, and given his contract situation, he wouldn’t cost them a fortune,” Mba added.

It is worth noting that Lookman, a UEFA Europa League champion and Africa Cup of Nations finalist, is also the reigning African Player of the Year.
