Ugandan international and striker Richard Basangwa is on the verge of a major move from Uganda Premier League side Express FC to Swedish top-flight club BK Häcken, The Nerve Africa has exclusively learned.
The 21-year-old has six months remaining on his contract with Express, having joined the club for a single season in September this year. Express FC has left the door open for the departure of their prized forward, with expectations of receiving valuable monetary compensation.
Sources close to the player’s representatives, Sepuya Inc Agency, have confirmed serious negotiations between BK Häcken and Basangwa. Reports indicate that the Swedish club has offered a three-year contract, anticipating a partnership between Basangwa and compatriot John Paul Dembe in the forward line.
“It’s close to a done deal, as Express has permitted talks between Häcken and Richard (Basangwa). Once terms with the player are finalized, the club will proceed to negotiate compensation with Express for the remainder of his contract. Richard is highly rated and is seen as the ideal partner for John Paul Dembe to lead the attack,” a source told The Nerve Africa in an exclusive interview.
This season, Basangwa has made nine appearances in the Uganda Premier League for Express, scoring two goals and providing four assists. He joined the club from Egyptian side Wadi Degla, where he had been playing since the 2022/23 season.
Before that, the lanky forward featured for Gaddafi FC and six-time Uganda Premier League champions Vipers SC, winning both the league title and the Uganda Cup with the latter.
Meanwhile, Basangwa has represented Uganda’s senior national team, the Cranes, in 11 competitive matches, scoring three goals and providing two assists. He has also played for the national youth teams at U17, U20, and U23 levels.
