Contrary to widespread reports, Belgian Pro League giants Anderlecht were never in contact with Nigerian defender Chibuike Nwaiwu over a potential transfer from Austrian Bundesliga side Wolfsberger AC, sources have exclusively told The Nerve Africa.
The 21-year-old centre-back joined Wolfsberger just last summer on a free transfer from Nigerian club Enyimba, penning a three-year contract that runs until the summer of 2027. Since arriving in Austria, Nwaiwu has made a strong impression in his debut season, drawing interest from several European clubs thanks to his composed displays and physical presence.
Recent media reports had suggested that Anderlecht had initially pursued a deal but later pulled out due to financial reasons. However, sources close to the player insist those claims are inaccurate.
βClearly, Nwaiwu is one of the most promising young defenders in Europe right now, so itβs understandable heβs being linked with top clubs,β a source close to Scoutpush by Dudu Dahan, Nwaiwuβs agent, revealed. βBut there has been no contact with any team so far. The player is under contract for two more seasons, and we are in no rush. He is calm and focused on his development.β
During the 2024/25 season, Nwaiwu played a key role in Wolfsberger’s Austrian Cup triumph. He featured in 29 matches across all competitions, scoring four goals and providing one assist. Before moving to Europe, he played 42 matches for Enyimba over two seasons and began his professional career with Heartland Owerri in the Nigeria Professional Football League.
Despite growing calls for him to receive a senior call-up to the Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles, Nwaiwu has yet to earn his first cap.
