English Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion have opened initial talks to sign Ghanaian winger Kwadwo Opoku from MLS club CF Montréal, The Nerve Africa has exclusively learned.
In a surprising turn of events, The Seagulls have expressed concrete interest in signing the 23-year-old attacker, whose contract with CF Montréal runs until 2026. Brighton, now under the leadership of coach Fabian Hürzeler, are reportedly preparing a €2.5 million bid, expected to be submitted at the end of the 2024 MLS season.
Opoku joined CF Montréal from Los Angeles FC in 2024, in a deal reportedly worth up to €1.65 million. A source at his representation agency, UKSPORTMANAGEMENT.COM, confirmed the development, revealing that CF Montréal are likely to reject Brighton’s initial offer, as they value the Ghanaian at €4 million.
“Kwadwo (Opoku) is likely to move to Brighton at the end of the season, as they are really interested,” the source told The Nerve Africa in an exclusive interview. “The only challenge at this stage is that Montréal could demand €4 million, while Brighton’s initial bid stands at €2.5 million. However, talks will continue, as contact has already been made.”
Kwadwo Opoku’s Career So Far
Currently valued at €1.5 million by Transfermarkt, Opoku has featured 37 times for CF Montréal, scoring six goals and providing four assists. Prior to his move to Canada, he enjoyed a successful stint at Los Angeles FC, where he tallied nine goals and seven assists across 60 appearances. He originally joined LAFC in October 2020 after developing at Ghana’s Attram De Visser Soccer Academy.
International Prospects
Opoku has represented Ghana at U17 and U20 levels but is yet to earn a call-up to the Black Stars senior national team. A move to the English Premier League could increase his visibility and boost his chances of joining the senior squad in the near future.
If negotiations between Brighton and CF Montréal continue to progress, Opoku could become the next rising African star to grace the Premier League stage.
