In the midst of reports linking him away from French side Girondins Bordeaux to Georgian top-flight outfit FC Dila Gori, Ugandan international Travis Mutyaba has come out to clear the air, insisting that he’ll stay in France to honor the rest of his contract.
Multiple reports in France and Georgia had indicated that the 19-year-old had completed the move to FC Dila Gori, apparently exiting Girondins Bordeaux after just four months. It should be noted that Mutyaba joined the latter in September last year on a three-year contract.ย
However, in an exclusive interview with The Nerve Africa, Mutyaba, through his agency, Prosper Sports Agency, acknowledged that Dila Gori had expressed interest, but he turned it down to continue his development at Girondins Bordeaux.ย
โI am happy and feel settled in well at my team, and I will surely remain in France,โ Mutyaba started before adding: โI want to settle and get used to European football and its dynamics, because I’m on a development program.โย
โThe club in Georgia (Dila Gori) was willing to pay out the contract and were offering quite a lot more money, but we refused (with my camp), because I want to develop and master various bits of my craft first. It’s not always about money, the project has to be the right one as well, it’s very important.โ
โMy contract here is well spelt, and everything is going to plan. I don’t know what would make me want to leave. Bordeaux is one of most historically sound teams in France and Europe. It’s always a pleasure when I don the jersey, you feel the strength and responsibility,โ Mutyaba summed.
While Mutyaba has yet to score or assist since joining Girondins Bordeaux, he continues to receive the trust of manager Bruno IrIes, playing him in 14 games across all competitions. Irles is particularly impressed with his work rate and ability to bring others into play, as well as linking midfield and attack.ย
Prior to his spell at Girondins Bordeaux, Mutyaba, whose Transfermarkt valuation is estimated at โฌ100,000, featured for African and Egyptian powerhouse Zamalek SC. He has also previously played for Uganda Premier League giants SC Villa and Vipers SC.
Meanwhile, despite still being a teenager, Mutyaba has already accumulated 21 competitive caps for the Uganda National Senior Team, the Cranes, scoring three goals and assisting on six occasions.
