Massively experienced Kenyan national senior team skipper and forward Michael Olunga is set to extend his contract with Qatar Super League outfit AL-Duhail, The Nerve Africa sources have exclusively learned.
Olunga’s current contract at AL-Duhail is set for expiration in one-and-a-half years, but the club and the player have agreed on an extension. The 30-year-old is thus set to sign an improved new three-year contract that will run at least until the end of the 2028/29 campaign.
A source close to the player’s representatives, EMG Mundial, has disclosed that Olunga, who is one of AL-Duhail’s most important players, has agreed to extend the deal, and that an official announcement is set for later this week.
“AL-Duhail has been swift in granting Michael (Olunga) a fresh contract, as they didn’t want him to enter a spell where he has to negotiate with other teams. He’s the team’s best player, and they want to keep. The player is happy at the club and in Qatar, particularly. He’ll certainly sign a new three-year deal before the end of the week,” the source exclusively revealed to The Nerve Africa.
This season at AL-Duhail, Olunga has already scored nine goals and assisted on three occasions in 12 matches. He has established his name in the league’s history, for the time he has been there, becoming AL-Duhail’s all-time leading scorer with 121 goals.
From January 2021 when he joined the team, he has clinched successive Golden Boots and led the team to the Qatar Super League championship in the 2022-2023 campaign.
It should be recalled that Olunga’s career began in Kenya, where he honed his craft at Tusker FC and Gor Mahia before venturing abroad. His journey across Sweden at Djurgardens IF, China with Guizhou Zhicheng, and Spanish LA Liga outfit Girona.
He also played for Japanese Super League side Kashiwa Reysol, where he scooped the Golden Boot in 2020, scoring 28 goals in just 32 matches.
Meanwhile, at the international stage, Olunga has made 57 competitive appearances for the Kenya national senior team, the Harambee Stars, scoring 28 goals, and assisting on eight occasions.
