In an exclusive interview for The Nerve Africa, Ugandan rising star Travis Mutyaba opened up about his excitement and determination to revive the rich legacy of FC Girondins Bordeaux, a club steeped in history but currently facing the challenge of rebuilding from the fourth division of French football.Β
Despite their recent financial woes that led to their relegation to the Championnat National 2 (Fourth Division), FC Girondins Bordeaux remains one of the most historically significant clubs in French and European football.
They boast multiple championships in France, including six French League trophies and several other domestic cups. The club is currently bidding for a renaissance at the top level and has signed some of the finest young talents from around the world.
Ugandan international Travis Mutyaba is among the talented players acquired, bringing his impressive dribbling, playmaking, and goal-scoring attributes to Bruno Irles’ side.
Having previously played in the Uganda Premier League with SC Villa and the Egyptian top flight with Zamalek SC, this is Mutyaba’s first experience playing in France, and in Europe as a whole.
Playing for Bordeaux, a historical heavyweight, is an opportunity the 19-year-old had only dreamt of: βI’m deeply indebted and grateful for this chance to represent a club of Bordeaux’s magnitude and history. These are things I only dreamed of,β Mutyaba remarked in an exclusive interview withΒ The Nerve Africa.
Mutyaba also expressed gratitude to his representatives at Prosper Sports Agency for securing the move. βThanks to my management for believing in me. This wouldnβt have been possible without their tireless work. It should have happened earlier, but no complaints.β
The Uganda Cranes attacking midfielder is eager to be part of a major rebuild that will see the club return to the top divisions, where they have belonged for decades.
βI hope to contribute to the history of this great club and help get it back to the top of French football,β he said before adding, βThe reality of the situation at the club is what it is. So, we can’t dwell on itβwe have to work hard, as it’s up to us to get this great club back to where it belongs.β
βThe experience I’ve had in just two days has been overwhelming. The staff, the stadium, the players, and the facilities are unlike anything Iβve seen before. The atmosphere here points toward one goal: getting back to the top,β he explained.
Bordeaux is also home to former English international Andy Carroll, who previously played for Newcastle, Liverpool, West Ham, and a number of other top teams. Mutyaba has welcomed the chance to play alongside a player he grew up watching on television.
βTo play in the same league as a player of Andy Carroll’s caliber is amazing, but to be his teammate is an even greater honor. I hope to create many goal-scoring opportunities for him and build a good partnership on the field.β
The youngster, who won the CAF Confederation Cup with Zamalek, is looking forward to growing as a player and becoming one of the best in France.
βItβs early days, but I hope to showcase my abilities during my time here. I want to help the club, but also develop into a top player in French football. That way, Iβll be able to help my country (Uganda) more than ever before,β he concluded.
Mutyaba is expected to make his debut this Saturday as Girondins Bordeaux visit Olympique Saumur in the Championnat National 2.
