Following the expiry of his contract with 13-time Uganda Premier League champions KCCA FC, versatile midfielder Ashraf Mugume is set to move to Europe for his first professional stint abroad, The Nerve Africa has learned.
Mugume’s agency, Prosper Sports, is actively involved in talks with teams in the lower divisions of England as well as top-flight sides in Scotland and the Republic of Ireland.
In an exclusive phone interview with Prosper Sports Agency Managing Director Dennis Namanya, it was disclosed that a new deal with KCCA is highly unlikely. βHe (Mugume) had a wonderful time at KCCA, especially last season, but we’re now working on a fresher adventure.β
βTalks are ongoing with a number of teams in England, Ireland, and Scotland. It’s a lower league team in England, but exciting. We shall let you know when there’s a breakthrough,β Namanya added.
Particularly, talk of a potential move to England intensifies rumors that have in recent weeks linked Mugume to EFL League One side Wycombe Wanderers. The team is the former home of compatriot Uche Ikpeazu Mubiru.
Mugume spent the past three seasons at KCCA, where he played 68 times in the Uganda Premier League, scoring 12 times from midfield. Last season, he made 26 appearances, chipping in with six goals and four assists. He has also previously played for Police FC and six-time champions Vipers SC.
The 25-year-old has featured three times for the Uganda national senior team, the Cranes, since debuting in 2022. He is, however, not part of the Uganda Cranes team set to play Algeria in the World Cup qualifiers on Monday.
