Following his departure from East African giants Young Africans SC, defender Gift Fred is on the verge of joining Polish second division side Podbeskidzie Bielsko-Biała, sources have exclusively revealed to The Nerve Africa.
Fred is currently a free agent after his contract with Young Africans was terminated at the end of the 2023/24 season. He is currently training with the Uganda Cranes Select team participating in the FUFA Super 8 tournament.
However, Fred is now set for his first move to Europe. A source close to his representatives, Prosper Sports Agency, revealed that Podbeskidzie Bielsko-Biała has offered him a two-year contract, and he is expected to travel to Poland next week.
“There have been vigorous negotiations over the past weeks, and a breakthrough was reached on Wednesday. Fred will sign with Podbeskidzie next week after the medical tests. It’s a massive deal for him and his family, as they have been through a difficult time since he was released by Young Africans,” the source said.
The 26-year-old spent just one season at Young Africans, a stint that is unlikely to be memorable as he was deprived of playing time. He made only one appearance in the Tanzanian Premier League and did not feature at all in the CAF Champions League, despite the team reaching the quarterfinals.
Before his recent spell in Tanzania, Fred captained Uganda Premier League record holders SC Villa for two seasons. He has also played for FUFA Big League side Booma FC.
At the international level, Fred, who made his debut with the Uganda Cranes in 2022, has earned five competitive caps. He also featured in Uganda’s unsuccessful qualifiers for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
