Moments after signing a contract extension with Major League Soccer (MLS) Next Pro side New York Red Bulls II, Ugandan international Steven Sserwadda has vowed to channel his energies towards a return to the senior team (New York Red Bulls), The Nerve Africa has exclusively learned.

The 22-year-old, who has spent the last three years at the club, has signed a two-year contract that will keep him at the American side until December 2026. He intends to focus on building and contributing to his team while working towards a return to the New York Red Bulls, where he hasn’t played since 2023.

β€œI’m so glad that the club has trusted me with this contract, which reflects their support for my hard work,” Sserwadda said in an exclusive interview with The Nerve Africa. β€œThese will be two big, defining years in my career, and I’m ready to embrace them.”

β€œI just want to help my team achieve everything possible this season, but most importantly, I crave a return to the senior team. My time with them in 2022 was short-lived and didn’t go as anticipated, especially with the bad injury I encountered. That’s now in the past, and it’s up to me to work my way back to that stage,” he added.

Across his time with New York Red Bulls II, Sserwadda has made 41 appearances, scoring four goals and providing three assists. With the senior team (New York Red Bulls), he featured twice before being sidelined with a long-term, career-threatening injury. This injury led to his demotion back to New York Red Bulls II.

Before pursuing his American dream, Sserwaddaβ€”whose Transfermarkt valuation is estimated at €200,000β€”played for Kampala Capital City Authority FC in the Ugandan Premier League. With the team, he clinched the Ugandan Premier League title, the Uganda Cup, and the regional CECAFA Kagame Cup.

On the international stage, the midfielder has made four appearances for the Uganda senior national team, the Cranes, contributing one assist. Sserwadda also represented Uganda at the U-20 and U-23 levels, playing a key role in the 2021 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations, where Uganda reached the final but lost 2-0 to Ghana.
