Following his underwhelming performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations hosted in Ivory Coast this year, many fans feel Zambian forward Fashion Sakala has lost form after joining the Saudi Pro League.
The 26-year-old started Zambiaโs first two games against the Democratic Republic of Congo and Tanzania in Group F of the AFCON but was benched in the final game against Morocco and was only introduced in the second half, ending his campaign with no goals.
Sakala joined Saudi Pro League side Al Fayha in August last year after signing a two-year contract from Scottish club Rangers FC. During his two-year stint at Rangers, Sakala amassed 24 goals and 15 assists in 91 appearances, along with the Scottish Cup title. He also featured in a major European final during the 2022 UEFA Europa Final against Frankfurt.
His departure from the Scottish outfit surprised many, as the Chipolopolo striker was just hitting peak form under the stewardship of Michael Beale.ย
The striker had scored 10 goals and delivered 6 assists in 29 appearances since joining Al Fayha. However, fans, particularly those from Zambia, are not happy with the tricksterโs recent performances for the national team, with the bulk of them advising him to consider returning to Europe.
In response, Sakala told The Nerve Africa that he is content in Saudi Arabia.
โLike I said last time, I am not thinking about transfers at the moment. I am an Al Fayha player and happy here.โ
Sakalaโs contract with Al Fayha will end in June 2025, and it remains to be seen if the Zambian will consider returning to Europe.
Since moving to Saudi Arabia, his market value has slightly dropped from โฌ5.5 million to โฌ5 million according to Transfermarkt.
