Ugandan international midfielder Moses Waiswa has expressed his ambition to return to European football, more than a decade after his last appearance on the continent, The Nerve Africa has exclusively learned.
Waiswa last played in Europe in 2016 for Swedish outfit Växjö United. He later featured for South African side SuperSport United between the 2019/20 and 2021/22 seasons. Now a key player for Uganda Premier League champions Vipers SC, the 27-year-old believes he still has what it takes to succeed in Europe.
Currently under contract with Vipers until January 2026, Waiswa joined the club in 2024 from 13-time league champions KCCA FC, where he spent one and a half seasons.
“My journey playing professional football outside Uganda is far from over. It’s only a matter of time before I return to Europe,” Waiswa told The Nerve Africa in an exclusive interview. “When the opportunity comes, I won’t hesitate.”
Reflecting on his previous stint abroad, Waiswa added: “My first experience at Växjö in Sweden helped shape me both as a player and a person. It molded me into the footballer I became. While I’m enjoying my time at Vipers—especially with Champions League football ahead—I’m looking forward to another shot in Europe.”
This past season, Waiswa made 26 appearances in the Uganda Premier League, scoring once and providing three assists. His first stint at Vipers ended after the 2018/19 season, when he moved to South Africa. During his time at KCCA, he played 28 league matches, scoring three goals.
Waiswa’s domestic career is decorated with two Uganda Premier League titles and one Uganda Cup trophy. In 2018, he was crowned Uganda’s Finest Male Footballer of the Year.
On the international stage, the creative midfielder debuted for the Uganda Cranes in 2017. He has since earned 27 caps, scored four goals, and provided six assists. He also represented Uganda at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
With his contract at Vipers running into 2026, Waiswa remains focused on helping the club thrive in the CAF Champions League—while keeping one eye on a long-awaited return to European football.
