Kenyan international Austin Odhiambo has opened the door wide for a potential move to Belgian side KAA Gent, casting doubt on his future at local club Gor Mahia FC, The Nerve Africa sources have exclusively learned.
The attacking midfielder, whose contract with Gor Mahia expires in June 2025, has suggested that a transfer to Gentβcurrently sixth in Belgium’s top leagueβis an opportunity he wouldn’t dismiss, as it offers a chance to compete at the highest level of European and world football.
His comments come amid growing reports of interest from Gent ahead of the January transfer window. However, it remains uncertain whether Gor Mahia will allow their prized asset to leave for a fee in January or risk losing him for free in the summer.
βOf course, the reports have been there, and it’s flattering when you hear a team like Gent knocking on your door,β Odhiambo said in an exclusive interview with The Nerve Africa. βI respect Gor Mahia, and I’m happy here, but I would strongly consider the offer.β
βPlaying there (Gent) would mean a lot to me and my family, so it’s something Iβm giving sincere thought to. For now, I have to respect my team (Gor Mahia), honor my contract, and see what happens. Itβs footballβanything can change and anything can happen at any time.β
This season at Gor Mahia, the 24-year-old has played 12 games across the Kenya Premier League and the CAF Champions League, scoring five goals and providing four assists. Last season, he scored 12 goals and added 13 assists across all competitions.
On the international stage, Odhiambo, who made his debut this year for Kenyaβs senior national team, the Harambee Stars, has featured eight times, contributing directly to two goals.
