Ghana Premier League giants Asante Kotoko FC are on the verge of parting ways with experienced goalkeeper Fredrick Asare, following failed negotiations over a contract extension, Africa Foot reports.
The 25-year-old shot-stopperโs current contract runs out on June 30, 2025, and talks that began over two months ago have since collapsed due to disagreements over financial terms.
Asare to Walk Away as Free Agent
Asare, who joined Asante Kotoko from Accra Lions FC, is now set to leave the club as a free agent at the end of the season. A member of Ghanaโs senior national team, the Black Stars, Asare has fallen down the pecking order at Kotoko and is no longer the first-choice goalkeeper.
His place in the team was taken by Mohammed Camara, which significantly impacted negotiations and left Asare disillusioned with his role.
โHeโll Definitely Moveโ โ Source Close to Asare
A confidant of Asare, who is part of his management team, revealed that the goalkeeper is frustrated and already looking forward to life after Kotoko.
โWith the situation at the moment, he’ll definitely move at the end of the season. He has not played much and his relationship with the coach is far from pleasing. Unfortunately, he hasn’t received any offers from anywhere yet, which makes the whole situation even more complicated. But, we’re working to get him the perfect project, and the biggest focus is in Europe, because he is a brilliant goalkeeper.โ
Denials from the Club, But Situation Remains Unchanged
In January 2025, Kwesi Appiah, Asante Kotokoโs Head of Sports Affairs, dismissed reports that Asare was unhappy or had asked to leave. However, the goalkeeper’s playing time has not improved, and tensions with the coaching staff appear to have deepened.
Asare has made just 15 appearances across the Ghana Premier League and domestic competitions this season. He has faced criticism from sections of the fan base for errors leading to goals, further diminishing his status within the squad.
International Career and Market Value
Despite his limited minutes, Asare has earned multiple call-ups to the Black Stars, though he is yet to make a competitive appearance. He has previously featured for Ghanaโs U-17 and U-20 national teams, underlining his pedigree at the youth level.
According to Transfermarkt, Asareโs current market value is estimated at โฌ150,000.
With just weeks remaining on his deal and no firm offers yet on the table, Asareโs next destination remains uncertainโbut his camp is targeting a move to Europe, banking on his talent and experience.
