Ghanaian international and versatile defender Daniel Amartey is edging closer to a return to competitive football after nearly a year on the sidelines. The former Leicester City star is preparing for a fresh chapter in his career following his exit from Turkish Super Lig side Besiktas in 2024.

The 30-year-old has been a free agent since leaving Besiktas, with his departure surrounded by a turbulent transfer saga. Reports indicated the club had been actively trying to sell the centre-back, who still had a year left on his contract at the time.
Saudi Move Rejected Amid Transfer Tensions
The situation intensified when Amartey allegedly turned down a move to Saudi Arabian club Al-Shabab FC. Besiktas spokesperson Huseyin Yucel claimed the defender was only open to joining clubs in England or Germany.
Amartey firmly denied those claims, calling them “completely untrue.” “Nothing like that happened. Those allegations should be disregarded,” he said at the time.
Training Hard and Ready to Return
Now, with the summer transfer window approaching, Amartey is ready to make his return. A close family member—who also serves as his advisor—revealed exclusively to Africa Foot that the Ghanaian is fully fit and eager for his next opportunity.
“He’s been working hard with personal trainers and is ready for the next move,” the source said. “He’s calm, not in a rush, and won’t accept just any offer. But he’s hungry to get back on the pitch. Where will he end up? The team is working hard to secure the best project for him. He’s already proven himself in the Premier League, so expect him to be back this summer.”
Premier League Pedigree and Market Value
According to Transfermarkt, Amartey is currently valued at €2.5 million. He made 27 appearances for Besiktas during the 2023/24 campaign and was part of Leicester City’s historic Premier League title-winning team in the 2015/16 season.
Transfer Links With Ipswich and Trabzonspor
Recent reports have linked him with English Championship side Ipswich Town FC, who were recently relegated, as well as Turkish giants Trabzonspor. The latter had expressed interest last summer, but a deal failed to go through.
Still a Key Figure for the Black Stars
On the international stage, Amartey has earned 55 caps for Ghana’s senior national team, the Black Stars. His latest appearance came during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast.
