Ugandan defender Timothy Dennis Awany has attracted interest from Croatian top-flight outfit NK Varazdin, which is set to lure him from his current Israeli top-tier team FC Ashdod, sources at The Nerve Africa have exclusively learned.
Awany still has a year left on his current contract with Ashdod, but Varazdin is ready to mount a fight for his signature. A source at Y.O Football Agency (Awany’s representatives) has disclosed that the two clubs have already opened talks and that the player is keen on the move.
“It’s true the clubs held talks last week that seemed fruitful. They will continue next week to discuss compensation to Ashdod should they decide to let Awany leave. He is also open to the move, so at the moment, it doesn’t look complicated,” the source revealed to The Nerve Africa.
The 27-year-old, whose TransferMarket valuation is estimated at €350K, has been at Ashdod for the past five seasons, having joined them at the start of the 2019/20 campaign from 13-time Uganda Premier League champions KCCA FC.
He has since established himself as an integral figure at the club, making 147 appearances across all competitions. Last season, he played 24 times. Leaving KCCA as captain five years ago, he had secured two league titles under the stewardship of legendary head coach Mike Mutebi.
Awany is a mainstay in the Uganda national senior team setup and has accumulated 33 caps to his name. He was part of the Uganda Cranes team that lost 2-1 to Algeria in the recently played 2026 World Cup qualifier. He was also part of the team that played in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, which is the country’s most recent participation in the competition.
