Kenyan Gor Mahia’s star players, Benson Omala and Rooney Onyango, are reportedly on the radar of a top European team according to Pulse Sports.Β
Harambee Stars coach Engin Firat has disclosed that he recommended the duo to a European side after their standout performances during the national team recent games.
Benson Omala, the league’s top scorer, and Rooney Onyango, a dependable right-back, have been instrumental figures under coach Johnathan McKinstry. Their noteworthy skills have reportedly captured the attention of European scouts, prompting to facilitate their potential move abroad.
In an interview with People Daily, Coach Engin Firat emphasized his role in opening doors for talented players in the country, stating, “My work is to open doors for the rich talents in the country. In the past, most of our foreign-based players played for Gor Mahia.” He highlighted that despite Gor Mahia being crowned champions this year, no player received offers from Europe. Firat disclosed that he recently spoke with a friend who owns a European club, champions in their country and participants in the European Cup, about Omala and Onyango.
While Onyango has become a key player in Firat’s recent lineups, Omala was given a rare opportunity during Monday’s match, coming on as a substitute and scoring a debut goal for the national team. Onyango also made a significant impact, scoring the fourth goal and assisting Omala. The duo’s impressive performances have heightened the anticipation of a potential move to European football.
Notably, while Onyango is yet to experience European football, Omala had a brief stint in Sweden with FC Linkoping City in 2021. The football community now eagerly awaits whether Firat’s recommendation will materialize into a significant opportunity for these promising Kenyan talents on the European stage.
