Former Kenya national senior team captain Victor Wanyama has confirmed that he will leave Major League Soccer side CF Montreal when his contract expires on December 31, The Nerve Africa has exclusively learned.
Wanyama has been with the MLS Eastern Conference side for the past four years, joining them in March 2020 after departing English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur. However, he has now decided to move on and is ready to embrace a new challenge.
In an exclusive interview with The Nerve Africa, the central midfielder revealed his decision but declined to disclose his next move. He did, however, leave the door open to returning to his native Kenya as he contemplates retirement.
“My time here (at Montreal) has been worthwhile, with so many memories, but I’m done. I’m in fine shape and can still play at the top level, so I’m ready to explore new opportunities. Everything is possible at this point, including returning home. I’ll let my team (CCC) handle the details of all that,” Wanyama told The Nerve Africa.
Wanyama, whose Transfermarkt valuation is currently estimated at €800,000, made 15 appearances for Montreal in the 2023/24 season, scoring one goal. Since joining the team, the 33-year-old has played 118 games, scoring five goals and providing as many assists.
The combative midfielder previously played for Tottenham, where he made 97 appearances, scoring seven goals and registering one assist. He also played for Southampton, Celtic, and Beerschot, spending three, two, and one season with each club, respectively. In Kenya, he featured for AFC Leopards in 2006.
Although he stepped back from international duty with the Harambee Stars, Wanyama is still regarded as one of the greatest players in the team’s history, earning 54 competitive caps and scoring eight goals for the national side
