Despite a salary reduction, midfielder Alfred Duncan signed a contract with Venezia FC in the summer of 2024. The experienced Ghanaian, who holds the record for the most Serie A appearances among African players, is expected to help the Italian team maintain their position in the elite division. If the team performs well, Duncan may secure a new, more lucrative contract in the future.

Career Salary Comparison
Duncan’s salary more than doubled after his first loan move to US Livorno 1915. His earnings significantly increased again after a loan to US Sassuolo Calcio, with his departure from UC Sampdoria nearly doubling his salary.
Over five years with Sassuolo, Duncan’s earnings changed three times: first after signing a permanent contract, and then during the 2017/2018 and 2018/2019 seasons. After moving to Fiorentina, the Ghanaian midfielder’s salary almost doubled, reaching the highest point in his career. However, his contract with Venezia FC led to a reduction in his earnings by nearly €200,000.

Market Value: Among the Top Five Most Expensive Players, Despite a Decline
After winning the youth championship with Inter Milan’s U19 team in the 2011/2012 season, Duncan’s transfer value increased more than fivefold. In the middle of the next season, he moved to US Livorno 1915 on loan for more playing time. Their promotion to Serie A led to a more than sixfold rise in his market value. However, after the team finished last in Serie A the following season, his value dropped by €500,000. Following his permanent transfer from Milan, Duncan’s market value steadily increased, quadrupling by the 2018/2019 season, which was his most productive.
However, by the 2019/2020 season, Duncan had lost his starting spot, and his market value began to gradually decline. After a loan to Cagliari Calcio, his value halved, and by the time he joined Venezia, it had decreased by 2.5 times. Currently, Transfermarkt.com values Duncan at €4 million, making him the fourth most valuable player at Venezia FC.

Achievements with the National Team
Alfred Duncan made his debut for the Ghana senior national team in the fall of 2012. However, the following summer, he joined the U20 team for the World Cup. Ghana lost to eventual champions France in the semifinals but went on to win bronze by defeating Iraq in the third-place match.
Duncan, however, did not achieve notable success with the senior national team. Over five years, he played in only eight matches and never represented Ghana in any major tournaments. In 2017, Duncan officially retired from international football.
Prospects
Alfred Duncan started the 2024/2025 season as a key player for Venezia. However, by late September, the midfielder faced muscle issues, and his return to the field is expected in early October. If Duncan helps Venezia stay in Serie A, his contract may be automatically extended for another season.
