Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy has 36 states. One of these states is governed by “a mad dog” without a leash, according to the wife of the president Aisha Buhari.
The president’s wife was reacting to an allegation by a governor in Nigeria’s southern Ekiti State Ayodele Fayose, who claimed that Mrs Buhari was indicted in the Halliburton Scandal. “When that American, Jefferson, was being sentenced, the President’s wife was mentioned as having wired $170,000 to Jefferson. Her name was on page 25 of the sentencing of Jefferson. We can serialize the judgment for people to see and read,” Fayose had said in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary Mr Idowu Adelusi.
The governor was reacting to the freezing of his accounts by anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) which he described as unconstitutional as he enjoys immunity as a sitting governor.
The anti-graft agency has been criticized as being used by the presidency to fight the opposition. Fayose is the most outspoken member of the opposition. Other outspoken members of the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), are already on trial.
The EFCC admitted to freezing Fayose’s accounts. “It is true that we have frozen Governor Fayose’s accounts in connection with an ongoing investigation. We will soon release the details of our findings to the public,” EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren had said. “We froze the account because Fayose has no immunity against investigation.”
The brazen attack on the wife of President Muhammadu Buhari who has a reputation of abhorring corruption has been addressed by the presidency.
Official Spokesperson to President Buhari Garba Shehu described the allegation as false and challenged Fayose to to produce evidence from the records of investigation and subsequent trial of Jefferson to prove that Mrs Buhari was linked to the scandal. He also warned the governor that the president’s wife had the right to “protect her reputation from being recklessly maligned”. Apparently, Mr Shehu’s statement was not good enough for Mrs Buhari who tweeted her anger away.
“Enough is Enough Fayose. A mad dog that isn’t chained. I refuse to keep quiet,” she wrote.
Silence is golden, they say. But when a president’s wife decides to fight dirty, the account must have been hacked. Of course, it wasn’t.
Enough is Enough Fayose. A mad dog that isn’t chained. I refuse to keep quiet.
