Kariba Dam water levels ‘Dire,’ Zambian Energy Minister says

Water levels in the Kariba dam, which provides hydroelectric power to Zambia, are “dire” and “extremely dangerous,” the country’s energy minister said.

“God forbid where we should have a situation where we might have to shut them down because the water level is below the minimum recommended,” Dora Siliya told reporters Thursday in the capital, Lusaka.

Lake Kariba straddles Zambia’s border with Zimbabwe, generating hydropower for both southern African countries. A drought has left the dam depleted and brought it close to the minimum water levels required to run its generators.
